Studio Thadian Pillai

Today, working in the now critical arena of the environment carries a twinned responsibility; both to landscape, and to the people who inhabit it.  This responsibility is emphasised where a project is public, large-scale or corporate in nature.

For this reason the Studio is committed to the sustained creation of opportunity for others; opportunity for learning, self-development, advancement and contribution.  This is expressed in a range of ways, from visionary co-creation and co-production with communities and stakeholders, to the personal mentoring of students, graduates and young professionals.

The images shown here describe some of the activity directly inspired by one of the Studio’s public art commissions, The Wall.  Throughout the project, the Studio created a unique range of opportunities: some within educational, and museum and gallery contexts; some for young artists and designers in need of professional internships and important early opportunities for exhibition; and others for members of the public, who were enabled to make an active contribution to their local community.

Connecting and strengthening communities of people through new relationships is the hallmark of a Studio project; the aim always, to increase understanding, respect and resilience between people and places.

The Wall is sponsored by the Big Lottery Fund and the Foundation for Sport & the Arts.  With thanks to Our Lady Immaculate Catholic Primary School, Essex, and the individuals and organisations who made so active a contribution to the project.  Additional photography courtesy of Jenni Campbell & Tilly Shiner.
