The functional requirements of the private-public space in front of a property are several and varied, from the presentation of the building to the parking of vehicles. But for the Studio such space serves the equally critical function of signaling that you are home.
This garden is an integrated, three-dimensional composition of architecture, planting and parking for six vehicles. The planting design has been created to be understood both at speed by passing traffic, and for more intimate experiences when arriving on foot. Evergreen forms respond to the topography of the site, anchoring the building to its context and providing a dramatic counterpoint to more ethereal herbaceous planting. Gossamer grass flowers in continual movement capture light dynamically. Deciduous skeletons and ornamental bark continue to present the building and provide visual pleasure throughout the winter.
