“I took a walk down to the bottom of the garden the other day, and it looks like a completely different garden. It is a beautiful transformation.” - Denise W, Broad Oaks
Subject to the passage of time, the garden is an ongoing process rather than a 'product'. Its continual growth, change and flux mean that it is not simply designed or built, but continuously made. Maintenance is required if the design vision is to be realised, and the space is to continue to answer the needs of those who call it home. For this reason, fine horticultural practice and continuing care are central to the Studio’s work.
Directed by the specific requirements of a client and garden, maintenance is carried out by the Studio’s own qualified team, or those on-site with whom it collaborates closely. It is a ‘hands-on’ approach that carries the Studio’s horticultural knowledge and experience of specific plant requirements.
Studio maintenance activates the full potential of a garden or landscape, whether it is an existing space in need of restoration, or a newly implemented scheme still requiring the guiding hand of establishment. It creates and retains designed form through the training and pruning of both formal and informal planting; it maximises seasonal climaxes and ensures the occurrence of designed crescendos; it extends interest across the year by managing plant maturity to reveal the beauty of fruit, seed and stem; and in times of shifting environmental conditions, it nurtures the land to leave it more resilient than before.
Continually re-newing the places in which we live, Studio maintenance creates gardens and landscapes that are an energising and constantly renewed joy for those who live with them. It is maintenance for performance certainly, but also profoundly, for pleasure.
