Space, time and light are sculptural media. In the landscape and garden they can be subtle, or made explicit.
Movement around this garden takes place through a series of sculptural volumes, described through apparent or suggested planes of space. Where these planes are apparent they become objects within space, such as the gazebo, arcade, wall and the daring flight of steps. Their design within the garden draws on Thadian Pillai's understanding of sculpture and the three-dimensional object in space. This incites a dynamic that intensifies the spatial experience, allowing the owners to not only view 'the objects', but to inhabit them.
In this context, where the intention is to create a union between form and light, built structures are in dialogue with plant structures. The planting design here is therefore highly specific. In the same way that the the construction of the hard landscaping is revealed and promoted, plant selection makes evident the still unsurpassed engineering of the natural world.
