Larger landscapes require strategic but sensitive management. This woodland forms part of an estate surrounding an historic listed building. When the Studio first became involved in its care, it was in decline and at the risk of over-maturity. The management of the landscape has since been modified to support soil health, and the natural processes of plant succession and renewal. The tree population is now managed on a cyclical basis; some are allowed to grow to maturity to maintain a protective canopy, while others are pollarded or coppiced for fuel and the renewal of the landscape.
New tree selections are being made for their harvest potential, or for their contribution to the local ecology. Re-colonising the woodland floor with wildflowers has increased the biodiversity, and also the pleasure of those who have the privilege of living with it. In Spring the woodland is filled with bluebells and the sound of birdsong. The tree canopy then closes and the wood is again veiled in the vibrant tranquillity of summer green.
